Don’t get me wrong, promoting affiliate products is a great way to monetize your online business.  And when you are building niche sites, if you are not sure if a niche site will work out or not, a great strategy is to build the site and put in your traffic channels, and drive your prospects to relevant affiliate products.

If the site takes off and does well, then you have a winner on your hands.  Then take the time and money to create your own product and promote that instead of an affiliate product. You get to keep 100% of the profits.

But I don’t see this as an either/or, but rather as another strategy to build your online business.

Creating our own information products can do a number of things for our online business.  First it brands us as a product creator.  Second, it opens doors with other online marketers who are always looking for new products to promote.  Thirdly, it brands us as a subject matter expert. And lastly, it allows us to control our own destiny by creating and selling OUR products.

There are so many benefits to creating your own product.

But there are challenges also.

The biggest challenge is what I call “The Curse of the Blinking Cursor”. You know what I mean.  We all have great ideas, sit down at the computer, power it up, open up a Word Processor, and we are faced with a blinking cursor.

Where do we even begin? Where do we start? Will anyone like this idea?

So you look for shortcuts.

The Problem with Creating Products Using PLR

A great way to avoid the curse of the blinking cursor, is to use Private Label Rights (PLR) material. Which is a great way to get started.  I use PLR.  I buy a lot of PLR.  A lot of PLR is good quality.  A lot is pretty poor.

But you have to rewrite and redo PLR to make it yours.

If you just rehash it and try to promote it as your own without making any significant changes to the material, then you are doing yourself and your customers a disservice.

And if you want to create a UNIQUE information product with both audio and text – that is really tough to find with PLR.

There is a better way.

Another great way to create products is to hire the writer of the content.  You can hire someone from, eLance, or any number of online services to write articles, ebooks, short reports, even code and write software for you such as WordPress plugins.

But to get good quality content out of your ghostwriter, you need to give him/her guidelines, framework, an outline of what you want in the product.

There is a significant investment of time and resources (money!) to get good quality content from someone else that you are paying to create.

And here is something most people do not talk about.

Most of the time, the ghostwriter is not a subject matter expert. Where did they get their material?  Yes they got an outline from you, but where did they get the material?

All too often the resulting content, is rather general.  It is something that anyone can find by going to Wikipedia. It really isn’t unique indepth content, but rather general.

The Problem with Creating Products by Writing Your Own eBook

I have a confession to make.

I have never written an ebook. And I never plan to.

I will write a physical book, but even then there is this problem:

Writing an ebook takes too damn long and takes too damn much typing!

There.  I said it. Too much work if you ask me!

Typing. Lots of typing.

I took typing class in summer school many many years ago.  And I can type with both hands and rarely look down at the keyboard. But I know that I am not a 60 word per minute typist.  I am more like a 20 or 25 work per minute typist.

Industry standard is 250 words per page. So for me, to type without errors and corrections it will take 10 minutes of typing non-stop. If I want to create a 60 page ebook on a subject, that is 600 minutes or 10 hours.

Of typing.

Nothing but typing.

No bathroom breaks.  No eating or drinking.


Just triple that time estimate.  So a 60 page ebook will take up to a 30 or 40 hours of my time.  500 words or two pages will take one (1) hour.

The Solution is to Create Products by Talking

The average talking speed of a North American adult is about 150 words per minute (wpm). So if I have a conversation with a subject matter expert and we talk for 30 minutes there will be 4,500 words created.

And I can have that audio conversation transcribed into words.

Do I try to create an ebook by typing? 1 hour = 500 words or 2 pages

Do I try to conduct an interview? 30 minutes = 4,500 words or 18 pages.

What is a better use of time? Creating content writing word by word? Or by talking?

And remember, the interview is with a subject matter expert.  They are an expert!  If you are writing an ebook about a subject you are not an expert on, you will have to do a lot of research which means even MORE of your time.

Instead, find an expert. Conduct an audio interview over the telephone. Record that interview. Transcribe the interview. Compile that interview into an ebook. And then sell that ebook!
